Chelsea have sacked Frank Lampard after 18 months in charge of the West Londoners. The Blues were sat in 9th place in the Premier League after losing to Leicester City in their previous game. A Chelsea statement read: “This has been a very difficult decision, and not one that the owner and the board have taken lightly. We are grateful to Frank for what he has achieved in his time as head coach of the club. However, recent results and performances have not met the club’s expectations, leaving the club mid-table without any clear path to sustained improvement. There can never be a good time to part ways with a club legend such as Frank, but after lengthy deliberation and consideration it was decided a change is needed now to give the club time to improve performances and results this season.”
Hertha Berlin have reappointed Pal Dardai as their head coach. Dardai had previously been in charge of the German capital club for four years beginning in 2015. The Hungarian is bringing assistants Andreas Neuendorf and Admir Hamzagic, goalkeeping coach Zsolt Petry and fitness trainers Henrik Kuchno and Hendrik Vieth with him.
Xabi Alonso’s acquittal on tax charges has been annulled by the Superior Court of Justice of Madrid. The former Real Madrid, Liverpool and Bayern Munich great was charged of evading taxes to the tune of over £500,000, charges which Alonso has denied. Other high-profile players had accepted their charges which originated from the Hacienda tax operation, but Alonso, now head coach of Real Sociedad’s B team, has always maintained his innocence and that was upheld in November 2019 in a Madrid court, when he was cleared of all charges. However there will be a new trial after Madrid’s public prosecutor claimed to have new evidence.
49ers Buy Up More Of Leeds
The investment arm of the NFL side San Francisco 49ers have increased their shareholding in Leeds United to 37%. The 49ers originally bought 15% of the Premier League club in 2018, while they were in the Championship. The president of 49ers Enterprises, Paraag Marathe, has been appointed as Leeds’ new vice-chair.
