Every word Alan Irvine said on Everton, substitutes and West Ham transfers amid Vladimir Coufal move

Very disappointing result because obviously we wanted to get through to the next round. As far as the performance was concerned there were some good things about it, especially the first half when I felt as if we were very much in the game.

Second half we got off to a great start but then we conceded three really poor goals in the second half, all three of them we would like to think that we wouldn;’t have made those mistakes.

IOt certainly cost us. I don’t think the result was a fair reflection of the game overall. We had a big moment at 2-1 down when Seb Haller had the overhead kick, if that drops neither side then it probably goes in. One big moment.

The next big one was conceding the third goal.

Three games in charge, how has it been working with Moyes in isolation?

The fact is every club needs their manager, there is no doubt about that. We have replacements for players in positions but there is no replacement for the manager and clearly players get proper answers from the manager. I am not able to answer a lot of things they are asking about because I don’t have that responsibility.

It is one of those situations where we will certainly get on and do the nest we can and pass the messages on that he wants but in the end we need David back as soon as we can and I said that after Wolves at the weekend, not just because of the result today.

Think you’ll be working with any new players soon?

Not that I am aware of, don’t think there is anything happening right at this moment. One of the things David has been able to focus on is looking for players at this particular time and he has asked us as a coaching staff to look at a few players.

I don’t know any of the details about where we are with regard to any signings. I keep saying I’m not sure, that applies to the players too so I’m sorry I can’t answer that.

Disappointed with the defending of the goals, especially the second?

Darren Randolph of West Ham looks dejected after conceding Everton’s second goal

Oh definitely and I had mentioned that already that I was bitterly disappointed with the way we defended for all three goals in the second half.

As you say, Richarlison was given the opportunity to cut in and that was something that we talked about in the build-up to the game. Everybody knows that is his preferred side to go to. The type of player he is, he wants to come in and open up his shooting opportunities.

That shouldn’t have been allowed.

But it was a very big deflection though we should have stopped that earlier.

What was the reasoning behind the lack of substitutions?

Well we have ended up, first of all, got a group of players that have done well in the previous game in this competition and they have been looking for their opportunity to show what they can do against a Premier League team because we had the situation where you perform well against a couple of League One teams and people saying it is fair to judge them on that, perhaps they don’t get the credit that they deserve.

We were certainly mindful that those boys got another good run out and of course, they are all first team players. You are talking about players who have played a lot of games at this level, international players who came to the club for a lot of money so it certainly wasn’t a case of fielding a weakened team.

There were also some players we needed to protect a little bit and look after because of what is coming up as far as the league is concerned. Those were the reasons and we felt in any case, at 2-1 we were very much still in the game.

Seb’s overhead illustrated that and Yarma had a chance with a header but it wasn’t a case of thinking ‘oh, we are out of this now’. Unfortunately the third goal came 15 minutes to go and probably made it a real struggle for us. As I said already, you are wondering if at that stage you should take a chance with one or two other players we are trying to protect.
