Mendy displays key strength, Ziyech involved – Things spotted in Chelsea training ahead of Spurs

Chelsea are looking to take a step closer to Wembley tonight when they take on Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup fourth round.

The Blues breezed past Barnsley in the previous round, but Spurs will no doubt give Frank Lampard’s a tougher match this time around.

Lampard will no doubt rotate his squad for the match, with another important Premier League game against Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.

The Blues have been hard at training at Cobham ahead of the match, and here are some of the things we noticed.

Edouard Mendy displays key strength

Edouard Mendy could make his Chelsea debut against Spurs with the new signing not taking part in the draw at West Brom on Saturday.

The 28-year-old started training with the Blues at the end of last week and he has been stepping that up again ahead of the game.

He was also showing off his key strength, and one of the reasons he was brought in, which is claiming crosses and controlling his box.

The Senegal international stands at 6ft 6in and he could make a massive difference to the Blues defending at set pieces and dealing with crosses this season.

Hakim Ziyech in training

Hakim Ziyech is the forgotten signing right now, with the Moroccan having picked up a knee injury in the pre-season match at Brighton.

The winger is not quite right to return for the match against Spurs, however he is stepping up with his recovery ahead of a potential return.

The 27-year-old was back training with the first team and doing some shooting practice ahead of the match this evening.

Chelsea will be hoping that Ziyech will be available for the weekend’s game and to make a real impact in the side.

Antonio Rudiger

There has been a lot of speculation and discussion around Antonio Rudiger’s future after he has been left out of recent squads.

The Germany international is now the most likely centre-back to leave before the transfer window closes next Monday.

However, Rudiger continues to train with the first team and prepare himself for whenever he might get called upon to feature by Lampard.

The 27-year-old could still play an important part if needed, but it’s looking more likely he will be heading out the door.
