The extended summer transfer window shuts at 11pm on Monday, October 5 and there is still a position the Arsenal boss wants to strengthen.
The Gunners have been linked with a number of midfielders during this window, none more so than Thomas Partey and Houssem Aouar.
And with less than a week of the window to go, those two remain at the forefront of Arteta’s and the fans’ thinking.
It could be a late one for all Gunners supporters on Monday night, with the transfer chases for both of them set to go down to the wire.
Partey was the big link earlier in the window, but there has been a change in the wind in recent weeks with Aouar emerging as the more likely candidate.
Lyon president Jean-Michael Aulas has admitted that he wants a deal concluded by Friday – three days before the window shuts – but Arsenal’s stance remains clear – they must sell before they can buy.
The French club would not be against selling, as they need money to balance their books, but Manchester United could throw a spanner in the works.
Aouar is not the only Lyon star wanted by other European clubs. Former United player Mephis Depay is also garnering interest – notably from Barcelona.
And that is where United come in.
According to reports, Ole Gunner Solskjaer’s men have made an approach to sign Ousmane Dembele from the Catalan club. And that could have a knock-on effect.
If Dembele were to move to Old Trafford, the domino effect may start with Barcelona having the money to clinch the signing of Depay from Lyon, which in turn would mean Lyon not wanting or needing to sell Aouar to Arsenal.

Geoffrey Custard said with tongue firmly in cheek on Twitter: “If Dembele leaves then Barcelona have the money for Depay then Lyon don’t need the money for Aouar and we end up signing Ryan Fraser and Mikael Silvestre. Bad day for Arsenal.”
He was not the only one.
@AFCVEGAN said: “If Dembele goes to Man United, Aouar to Arsenal is off because Depay will leave to Barcelona.”
