Mikel Arteta explains surprise Gabriel Magalhaes selection decision for Liverpool vs Arsenal

Mikel Arteta has revealed why Gabriel Magalhaes was dropped from the Arsenal starting XI.

Gabriel started each of Arsenal‘s first two games of the season, both wins, but was only given a spot on the bench for the meeting with reigning Premier League champions Liverpool at Anfield tonight.

David Luiz started instead as part of a back three with Rob Holding and Kieran Tierney, and fans were left stunned by the decision.

But Arteta has now explained his thinking, telling Sky Sports: “He’s done really well, he’s adapted really well, he’s played a few games already with us.

“David has huge experience and he’s played here many, many times, he gives us something different.”

Arsenal have earned plenty of plaudits for their performances leading up to the game at Anfield and ahead of Monday night’s game, Arteta was asked if his side could show the progress they have made against the champions.

The Gunners boss replied: “It’s a progression and hopefully, you want to train every three days, but unfortunately that doesn’t happen all the time.

“I want my team to play with the same personality, the same courage and following our identity. “

Arsenal have won all three games so far this season, two in the Premier League and one in the Carabao Cup, and they also defeated Liverpool in the Community Shield.

They are looking to extend their impressive run of form in the league against the Reds this evening.
