The Blues started this season with a trip to Brighton & Hove Albion and overcame the Seagulls 3-1.
But they did not have things all their own way as they had to work hard for the victory at the Amex Stadium.
Brighton are a much more open and expansive team under Graham Potter and they caused Manchester United a number of problems at the Amex on Saturday too.
The Seagulls went ahead five minutes before half-time when Tariq Lamptey, a former Chelsea player, was felled in the box and striker Neal Maupay converted from the penalty spot.
Maupay did not just convert, however, he decided to take a panenka penalty, chipping the ball into the net with United keeper David De Gea going the wrong way.
It is the cheekiest of ways to score from the spot and show ice-cold nerve to take on a keeper of De Gea’s quality like that.
De Gea has had his detractors of late, following a number of errors and the Chelsea fans took great delight in making sure the United fans knew the Blues were loving what they were watching.
United did turn the game on its head with goals from Harry Maguire, Marcus Rashford and a 97th-minute Bruno Fernandes penalty, securing a 3-2 win after Solly March had thought he’d secured a share of the spoils with a 95th minute leveller, but it was Maupay’s cheek that made the Chelsea fans smile.
It was particularly sweet for those who remembered Maupay’s antics against Arsenal last season – the striker involved in the incident that led to Bernd Leno being injured, before going on to score the winner in added time against the Gunners.
