After losing 2-0 at home to Liverpool last weekend, the Blues responded by thrashing Barnsley 6-0 in the Carabao Cup third round on Wednesday night with Kai Havertz netting a hat-trick on his third appearance since his big-money summer transfer.
That should fill the Germany international with confidence and he will be looking to break his duck in the Premier League against West Bromwich Albion.
The Blues will go into the game at the Hawthorns with another new addition in the ranks, but head coach Frank Lampard has confirmed that Edouard Mendy will not make his debut.
“To start tomorrow is not going to happen, he’s had a long week where he hasn’t really trained, he flew in yesterday and it just feels too tight a turnaround to put him in contention to start the game,” Lampard told reporters.
That means either Kepa or Willy Caballero will start in between the sticks, although Lampard has not spoken to the Spaniard since bringing in a direct competitor for his position.
“I haven’t spoken to him, no. The announcement came and we trained, but I didn’t see Kepa,” Lampard added. “I will speak to him and with Willy Caballero over the next 24 hours or so. I have a very open line of communication with both of them.
“It is important with goalkeepers, they have their own small union in the training girl with the nature of how they work together. There is good competition there now, we know that and that’s how we move forward.”
In addition to Mendy, for this evening’s clash against the Baggies, the Blues will be without as many as five first-team players as Hakim Ziyech, Christian Pulisic, Billy Gilmour and Marco van Ginkel miss out through injury.
Meanwhile, Andreas Christensen is available again after missing the midweek win through suspension.
In addition, Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell are in contention to feature after making their debuts against Barnsley, and with that in mind, Lampard has plenty of options to choose from.
