Every word Alan Irvine just said on West Ham’s positive Covid-19 tests, when they found out and Hull win

When did you find out about the positive Covid results?

At 20 past 6 we suddenly got some info from our doctor and head physio to say there were three positive tests, the manager and the two players Issa and Josh.

Immediately at that point you’re thinking “we’ve got a game in an hour and ten minutes” so we had to focus on that, and that was exactly what we focused on.

We had to pick a different team. We had to make sure the players who were going to be in the team needed to do their jobs welI in terms of open play and set plays and I just went had a chat with the players, explained the situation and that was the last we talked about it, we just got on with the game.

It was vitally important that the players were prepared psychologically and they were prepared to go out and perform because this was an opportunity for them to impress and they certainly did that.

I was delighted with that. There were no players discussing it or looking for any kind of excuses about what was going on. No players were thinking the game couldn’t go on, it was really positive.

How long had you been at the stadium and did you have any contact with the players?

Contact in so far as, staff, we were in the same area as David. We weren’t sitting beside him, it was a big room and that wasn’t an issue for any of us.

We’d been at the stadium, we usually get there 1hr 45 to two hours so we had been around.

We were shocked by the news, because we have had so many tests and not had any positive. We do know that the tests are not completely accurate so we will wait and see what happens.

Robert Snodgrass of West Ham is closed down by George Honeyman of Hull City

If they are, you could be ten days without David Moyes, ready for that challenge?

I am quite sure he will be in touch with us, he certainly won’t be disappearing so we will deal with it once we know. It’s one of these situations that it could come back as false positive so we will wait and see.

Have you contacted Arsenal?

I haven’t and I don’t know if anyone else has.

We have been very particular about protocol right from the start of this. Our medical team are very aware of what’s happening, our Covid officer too and we have followed all protocols all the way through

What I am not sure of is what that is so I will wait to be told about that.

Worried there could be another shutdown?

I hope not.

Obviously those decisions are made by somebody else, we will just carry on until we are told otherwise.

Ajibola Alesebattles for possession with Thomas Mayer

Like we have done all the way along, we have adhered to all the guidelines, very careful not to put anybody at risk be it players, staff or families so we will just wait and see. I don;t know what has to be done next but clearly there will be discussions about it.

The youngsters, Alese and Ashby, put in some very mature performances?

They were absolutely brilliant, performed at a really high level from start to finish. Obviously for Harrison his finish was a shame having to go off but fortunately he doesn’t have a bad or serious injury which is what we were worried about.

Absolutely delighted with them but also with how the senior players helped them through because it is really important when the young boys are coming in, two of them in the back four, it’s fantastic that the lads around them like Randolph, Balbuena and the boys in front all helped out.

They deserve credit for that but certainly the young boys so as well, they both played extremely well.

Dressing room worried or are you worried about the tests?

I am not worried and the mood in the dressing room after the game was one of excitement, they know they played well and did themselves aload of good going forward.

They know I’ll be speaking to David and giving all of them gowing reports.

There wasn’t a mention from the moment that I went in before the game of it, which was shown in the performance and the mood in the dressing room was one with being content.
