Chelsea evening headlines as Gary Neville makes Frank Lampard claim amid Antonio Rudiger update

Good evening, Chelsea fans. Here are your evening headlines for Monday, September 21.

Gary Neville makes Frank Lampard statement after Liverpool defeat

Sky Sports commentator Gary Neville has given his verdict on Frank Lampard’s tactical approach after Chelsea lost 2-0 at home to Liverpool on Sunday.

“It felt like Chelsea had to change the way they play and their principles to compete,” the former Manchester United right-back said on his podcast.

“When you change the way you play it’s an acceptance that you are not good enough. You are telling your players.

“Sometimes players buy into it but if it goes wrong, it can damage them a little bit.

“I’m not saying Frank was wrong, he was trying to do it a different way. They were really passive and it’s a performance that wouldn’t have been allowed in a stadium full of fans.”

Here’s what he said in full.

Lampard must accept blame for latest Kepa mistake

Lampard should shoulder some of the responsibility after Kepa Arrizabalaga’s latest mistake between the sticks at Chelsea, argues football.london senior writer Alan Smith .

The Spain international made a number of high-profile errors last season and had lost his place to Willy Caballero in the final weeks of the campaign, but returned between the sticks last week against Brighton.

Chelsea began the new season with a 3-1 win down at the AMEX but Kepa was again criticised for allowing a long-range effort from Leandro Trossard to sail past him but kept his place for the visit of champions Liverpool on Sunday.

Unfortunately for Lampard, Kepa made another costly error after a pass out from the back was intercepted by Sadio Mane, who followed it up to double Liverpool’s lead at Stamford Bridge.

Here’s that piece in full .

Antonio Rudiger considering Chelsea future

Sky Sports report that Antonio Rudiger could be set to leave Chelsea as he considers his future at the club.

The Germany international wants regular football to stake a claim in Joachim Loew’s squad for next summer’s rescheduled Euro 2020 tournament, but was left out of Lampard’s squad for Liverpool on Sunday and is yet to feature this season.

“We have five centre halves at the club so I can’t pick three on the bench so that is the way it is,” the Blues boss explained.

The transfer window is open for two more weeks, set to close at 11pm on October 5.
