Gabriel Martinelli told how he can learn from Willian to excel at Arsenal

Former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood has identified how Gabriel Martinelli and other young players at Arsenal can learn from Willian after his arrival.

The Brazil international was signed on a free transfer from Chelsea and quickly made an impact for the Gunners, registering two assists on his debut against Fulham.

While his impact on the field is clear, Sherwood has also identified how Willian can help the young players like Martinelli develop in north London.

“Willian, for me, is a great signing. The younger players have just got to look at Willian every single day and how he applies himself,” he told the Kelly and Wrighty show.

“You don’t play for a length of time at the top level, like Willian has, and Aubameyang as well, keeping him there is huge.

“Martinelli now has got someone there, he’s got a reference, he can see how he works on the training ground and I’m sure they will take the boys aside, if they want extra training or some development.

“Or if it’s not on the training pitch, if it’s just a word in their ear after training, they’re going to help. The young players can only be as good as the experienced players and that is going to help.”

Martinelli joined the club last summer and was having an impressive debut season in London before injuries interrupted his campaign.

The young Gunners star looks set to miss the rest of 2020 after undergoing surgery on a knee cartilage injury suffered in training in June.
