It is understood that the Blues are confident of sealing a deal for Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, with talks still ongoing over a fee.
The Blues have been searching for a new goalkeeper to push Kepa Arrizabalaga in the upcoming season, and football.london understands an initial bid of £18million for the 28-year-old has been rejected but Chelsea are expected to return with a bid closer to the Ligue 1 side’s valuation.
Technical director Petr Cech, who played for Rennes before moving to Stamford Bridge, is a keen admirer of the Senegal international, and is understood to have been a key driving force behind the move.
Mendy’s arrival would see him join several other high profile Chelsea signings with the Blues completing the capture of Thiago Silva, after the defender’s contract at Paris Saint-Germain expired.
Ben Chilwell has joined from Leicester City, after Lampard targeted left-back as a priority position to strengthen this summer.
The trio were joined by Malang Sarr on a free transfer, but it is thought the French defender will be loaned out for the upcoming season.
Kai Havertz has also arrived from Bayer Leverkusen for a club record fee that could rise to £89million.
With the new arrivals joining Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech as Chelsea’s major summer signings, Lampard is set to have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to selecting his side for the Blues’ opening day clash at Brighton.
The west Londoners begin their 2020/21 Premier League season at the Amex Stadium, before hosting champions Liverpool a week later.

If Mendy arrives in time, Lampard will be tempted to slot the goalkeeper straight into his side otherwise Willy Caballero could start, with Kepa still out of favour with the Blues boss.
Werner looks set to make his top flight debut, but according to The Athletic, Ziyech will miss out after suffering an injury in the pre-season friendly against the Seagulls last week.
The game also comes too soon for Chilwell, but Havertz and Thiago Silva could feature from the start as Lampard plots his best XI.
There will be increased competition for midfield places with Havertz’s arrival, and Mason Mount could be the one to miss out, whilst Christian Pulisic appears to have recovered from the hamstring injury sustained in the FA Cup final, after returning to full training.
Possible Chelsea XI to face Brighton on the opening day: Caballero, Azpilicueta, Zouma, Silva, Alonso, Kante, Kovacic, Havertz, Hudson-Odoi, Werner, Pulisic.
