Mikel Arteta’s side have been linked with a host of names, including Thomas Partey of Atletico Madrid, Chelsea winger Willian and Sporting Lisbon youngster Joelson Fernandes.
Willian looks set to join, but Arsenal are now concentrating on other deals, with Fernandes a reported target.
With that in mind, here is a round-up of everything we know so far about Arsenal’s pursuit of the teenager and all the very latest developments.
Fernandes dubbed as the next Cristiano Ronaldo
If Arsenal do successfully manage to secure the signing of Fernandes this summer then they can be rest assured that they would be landing a player with bags and bags of potential.
That is because the winger, who has already made four first-team appearances for Sporting, is considered as the next Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo, of course, came through the youth ranks at Sporting many years ago and has since gone on to become one of the greatest footballers of all time.
If Fernandes can get anywhere near the standard Ronaldo, now of Italian giants Juventus, has set throughout his career, he is set for a memorable ride himself.

Fernandes’ dream shirt number
Should the Gunners sign the Portuguese youngster this summer then all eyes would be on what shirt number he would take at the Emirates Stadium.
Nowadays, players can often be conscious of what number they take, especially if they have worn the same one right throughout their career.
So far, Fernandes, because of his relatively young career, has only ever worn two shirt numbers, but what are they?
Gunners ready to trigger release clause
Arsenal are ready to trigger the £40.8million release clause in Fernandes’ contract, a report by the Daily Express states.
Though Arsenal in need of adding players to the squad for the here and now this summer, head coach Arteta also appears to have a watchful eye on the future as well, with Fernandes not turning 18-years-old until February.
Despite Arsenal’s financial struggles this summer, they are hopeful that they will be able to pull a deal off for Fernandes, as his agent is Kia Joorabchian, who has close ties with the Premier League club.
Arsenal bid rejected
Arsenal have seen their first move for the player knocked back by Sporting, according to reports in Portugal.
Despite speculation that the Gunner were ready to trigger the £40.8 million release clause in Fernandes’ contract, A Bola report that Arsenal have had an opening offer of €20 million (£17.9 million) rejected by the Portuguese club.
Arsenal officials in Portugal to wrap up deal
Reports in Portugal also claim that Arsenal have sent transfer officials over to Portugal to get a deal for the teenager over the line.
According to A Bola (via the Mirror), has claimed that Arsenal are making a big effort to conclude the deal and believe that they will be able to sign the starlet for a fee of between £13.5 million and £18 million).
However, it is also reported that Sporting are still hopeful on Fernandes signing a new contract with the club.

Arsenal prepare second Fernandes bid
Portuguese publication A Bola – via the Express – are reporting that Arsenal are ready to lodge an improved second bid for Sporting star Fernandes.
The Gunners have already seen a bid just short of £20million turned down for the youngster, but are now said to be ready to have another go at testing Sporting’s resolve.
Fernandes has a release clause in his contract of £40.8million, but Arsenal remain hopeful that they can sign the winger for significantly less this summer.
It is also claimed that the North London club are ready to send officials out to Portugal this week to try and conclude the deal.
Second bid rejected
Arsenal have seen their second bid for Fernandes rejected by Sporting, according to A Bola (Via SportsWitness).
The second bid was said to be an improvement on the first, but still not near the player’s release clause of £40.8 million.
The report claims that Arsenal are aware of the clause, but are trying to get a deal done for less due to Sporting’s financial difficulties.
It is said that Arsenal are determined to get their man and are in ‘constant contact’ with Kia Joorabchian who is the player’s agent.
The Gunners face competition from Borussia Dortmund and Juventus for the teenager, with Dortmund also offering €20 million.
However, it is said that Arsenal are prepared to meet the release clause in Fernandes’ contract if they feel that the winger is likely to move anywhere else.
Player plus cash bid
According to The Daily Star, Arsenal are ready to make a player-plus-cash offer to sign Joelson Fernandes from Sporting.
The Portuguese club are reportedly looking for a fee of around £40million, but the Gunners are hoping to reduce the amount owed by offering an unspecified player.
The report claims Fernandes’ agent Kia Joorabchian, who has links with Arsenal director Edu, is looking to engineer a move for the teenager – with the Gunners favourites.
