Spurs face Everton on Monday in the Premier League but will struggle to repeat the solid campaigns of recent times which had seen the club become a perennial top-four side.
Life under Mauricio Pochettino was fruitful with an appearance in the Champions League final at the end of last term but a poor start led to his exit and fortunes have not improved under Jose Mourinho.
More evidence of that came last Thursday thanks to a 3-1 defeat at Sheffield United and reflecting on that result and looking ahead to next season, former Arsenal man Merson delivered a stinging verdict.
“I am watching Tottenham at the moment and I don’t see any fun. They must be thinking let’s just get this season done,” Merson told Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday.
“They are short and they need players. They have been shoe-ins for the top four but now they look a million miles off.
“I worry for them but they have to buy in to how Mourinho plays.
“It’s a clash of personalities at the moment. I don’t see any answer to this. I just think they will be an also-ran next season as well.”
