Frank Lampard believes Christian Pulisic has the potential to contribute a similar number of goals from wide areas as Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane should the United States international continue to apply himself on the training ground.
Pulisic, 21, has found the net in both games since the restart and already looks sharp having not played since New Year’s Day because of an upper leg issue.
While Lampard concedes the £58million signing from Borussa Dortmund has faced more scrutiny than most, it is important not to forget he is younger than Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori.
“I think he can be a really big player,” Lampard said in the build-up to this afternoon’s FA Cup quarter-final away to Leicester City. “Because he broke through so young in Germany and he moves to us, people’s expecations rise, but we have to take his age into consideration.
“There’s no doubt in his quality and you can see that. He is very keen to work and improve. Particularly, hungry at the minute because of his injury.
“And if he wants to learn, and he does, on the training pitch and how he sees the game, and if he looks at the players he sees around him who have made that sort of jump like the Raheem Sterlings, Saido Manes and Mo Salahs who are now producing numbers [of goals] from wide areas.
“It is important that he understands the work he needs to do to do that because he definitely has the talent to do it.
“He needs to try and get to that level and I am delighted to have him at the minute. He works hard every day and he has to set his sights as high as he can.”
