Chelsea supporters have taken to social media to mock Bayer Leverkusen after the Bundesliga side narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification.
The final round of German top flight games was played on Saturday, with Leverkusen needing to win and for other results to go their way in order to finish in the top four.
Leverkusen beat Mainz 1-0 with Kevin Volland scoring the only goal, but wins for RB Leipzig and Borussia Monchengladbach condemned Peter Bosz’s side to fifth place.
This means Leverkusen will play in the Europa League next season, but possibly without Kai Havertz if the midfielder departs this summer.
Havertz is reportedly a target for a number of clubs, including Manchester United, Real Madrid and Chelsea.
The Blues have already sealed deals for Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, but Frank Lampard’s side are reportedly among a handful of clubs who are keen on signing the Germany international after his impressive season in the Bundesliga.
And some Chelsea fans believe that Leverkusen’s failure to reach the Champions League could hand the west London side an advantage when it comes to landing Havertz.
Lampard previously dismissed reports that Chelsea had made an offer for Havertz.
“He’s a top player but we’re certainly not going to comment on players at other teams,” said the Chelsea head coach.
“It cannot be our focus. No bids have gone in.”
